BORIC ACID
BORIC ACID is a compound of Boron, Oxygen and Hydrogen with formula B(OH)3. It may also be called as Hydrogen Orthoborate, Trihydroxidoboron or Boracic Acid. It is usually colourless crystals or white powder that dissolves in water .it is a weak acid that yields various borate anions and salts and can react with alcohols to form Borate esters.
It is often used as an antiseptic, insecticide, flame retardant, neutron absorber or precursor to other Boron compounds.
APPLICATIONS/ USES
(1) It is useful in the process of electroplating.
(2) In combination with Borax, it is used as a fire retarding agent and also as welding flux by blacksmiths.
(3) It is used in the production of the glass used in LCD flat panel displays
(4) Medically it can be used as an antiseptic for minor burns or cuts.
(5) Boric acid is applied in a very dilute solution as an eye wash.
(6) Dilute boric acid can be used as a vaginal douche to treat bacterial vaginosis due to excessive alkalinity as well as candidiasis.
(7) It can also be used for acne treatment.
(8) It is also used to prevent Athelete’s foot by inserting some powder in socks or stockings.
(9) Boric Acid is widely used as an insecticide for the control of Cockroaches, Termites, Fire Ants, Fleas, Silverfish etc.
(10) Boric acid is used to treat or prevent boron deficiency in plants. It is also used in preservation of grains like rice and wheat.
